About US

Welcome to our world, where fashion meets empowerment! Melanin Apparel is a Black-owned and operated clothing line, conceived from a profound desire to ignite change and inspire unity. We are proud to introduce you to the founders, Nicole Hankens and Shanerica Hankens, who have turned their vision into a powerful movement.

Nicole and Shanerica co-founded Melanin Apparel in 2015, officially launching the brand on March 6, 2016. Their journey began in Baltimore, where the aftermath of the Freddie Gray riots ignited a passion for social justice and community empowerment. The events surrounding Freddie Gray’s death served as a catalyst, motivating them to create a brand that celebrates Black culture and promotes unity.

Growing up in a vibrant community, Nicole and Shanerica were deeply influenced by the struggles and triumphs of those around them. Nicole, a talented graphic designer and graduate of Portland Community College, always had a keen eye for aesthetics and a desire to use her skills for a greater purpose. Shanerica, a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a graduate of Clark Atlanta University, was inspired by the principles of sisterhood and service instilled in her during her college years. Together, they envisioned Melanin Apparel as more than just a clothing line; it would be a platform to amplify voices, share stories, and foster a sense of pride within the community.

At the heart of Melanin Apparel is a commitment to giving back. Nicole and Shanerica have actively donated clothing to less fortunate families, ensuring that everyone has access to quality apparel. They also recognize the importance of education and have awarded scholarships to outstanding students who demonstrate high academic achievement, empowering the next generation to pursue their dreams. Their community service extends beyond clothing and scholarships; they have spoken at various events, including Kwanzaa celebrations and radio interviews, sharing their story and advocating for social change.

Through these efforts, Nicole and Shanerica reflect their belief that true impact comes from uplifting those around them. Their mission is clear: to create apparel that not only looks good but also carries a message of hope and resilience. By weaving their personal experiences and the collective history of their community into the fabric of their brand, they empower others to wear their pride boldly and advocate for justice. Their story is a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and the unwavering spirit of those who dare to make a difference. Through Melanin Apparel, they are not just selling clothes; they are nurturing a movement rooted in love, respect, and the celebration of Black excellence.
